Speed Dates

SAINT VALENTINE'S DAY
Today is Saint Valentine's Day and the 1° Bachillerato B-C students  are celebrating love in a very unusual way. New couples appear every day thanks to social networks or dating apps or even TV programmes! We are trying to find our ideal match by "speeding dates" and that's what they are doing in this picture...

Well, in fact, they aren't the real students, but the characters they have invented!
The activity is taken from the British Council Learning website and consists of creating a personal profile and then rotate asking and giving information always sitting in pairs and changing couples every two minutes. After they have "met" 4 or 5 couples, they decide which one is the perfect mate and give reasons for their choice.
We had a really good time...why don't you try playing the Speed Date in your next class?

Conditional sentences Type II

WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF...?

Play this board game in class and your students will surely enjoy the conditional sentences

Procedure: The students sits in groups of three or four. The discussion activity begins with one person finding the question by rolling the dice twice. The 1st roll determines the number on the left. The 2nd roll determines the number at the top. Members of the groups can then discuss that question. The learners can ask and talk about any second conditional question if they land on “Ask Any Question”. Idea by Robert from www.allthingsgrammar.com

Exercises

A. THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR

A.1- Read this text:
In 1773, Britain tried to stop tea from being smuggled into America by sending cheaper tea straight from India. This was bad for shopkeepers, merchants and smugglers in the colonies. A group of colonists dressed up as Native Americans boarded three merchant ships in Boston harbour and threw 342 chests of Indian tea into the sea. This protest is known as the Boston Tea Party.
The British government decided to punish everyone in the colony of Massachusetts for what had happened:
·      It took away power from the local people and gave it to the royal governor.
·      It closed the port of Boston until the tea was paid for.
This collective punishment made the British king very unpopular with many colonists. Together with The Boston Massacre, it pushed the colonists towards revolution.

Now, answer the questions:

-       What is the main idea of the text?

-       What's happening in 1773?

UNIT  7.  THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION AND RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR

Read the following text :

The Bolsheviks were a group who believed that a small number of revolutionaries should lead a revolution to establish a socialist government. The leader of the Bolsheviks was Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov, who is generally known as Lenin.
The Bolsheviks also had a military force called the Red Guard, which consisted of soldiers as well as armed factory workers. The Red Guard was led by Leon Trotsky.
During WWI, Lenin was in exile in Switzerland. After the February Revolution he returned to Russia in a special train provided by the Germans. They hoped that he would start another revolution and that Russia would withdraw from the war.
Lenin increased support for the Bolsheviks using the slogan « Peace !,Bread !,Land ! ». He promised to end the war, give land to the peasants and give control of factories to the workers.
In October 1917 the Red Guards took control of Petrograd, including the headquarters of the Provisional Government. This is know as the October Revolution.
The Bolsheviks hoped that the elections for the new Constituent Assembly would show everyone how popular they were. Instead, they only won a small share of the vote.
Russian who opposed the Bolsheviks formed White Armies to fight the Bolshevik´s Red Army. This led to a civil war. The Bolsheviks held the Tsar and his family prisoner, and in 1918 they executed them.
At the startof the war, the Reds faced various problems:
-          The WWI Allies helped the Whites, because they were worried about communism spreading to other countries, and the wanted Russia to rejoin the war against Germany.
-          The Reds were surrounded by the Whites.
-          The White armies were led by professional soldiers.
However, the Reds controlled Petrograd and most of the industrial areas and railways. They were also better organised and more motivated. In 1921 they won the civil war, after three years of brutal fighting.
